Limitations
One major limitation in preventing child abuse is the lack of awareness on the issue, as well as the absence of a clear standard for when someone should report suspected abuse. You can help end this limitation by reporting ANY suspicion of abuse, no matter how small, to someone who can help. This can be done anonymously and can possibly save the life of a child. Another limitation is that in many cases, children are the witnesses to the abuse on other children, and are either too afraid or do not know how to help. You can help by teaching your children about abuse and the dangers or not helping. Talking to your children about this will help them to feel comfortable enough with the topic to know that abuse in any form is never acceptable, and that it is alright to speak up in order to help other children.
How can you help?
Prevention is key! It is crucial that we interrupt the cycle of abuse and neglect so that children and adults can receive the help and treatment that they need. If you suspect the abuse of a child, please stand up as their advocate and report any observed incidence. Below is a list (taken from Healthy Young Children) that, when followed by everyone, can help prevent child abuse. Following the list is the information for The Childhelp USA National Child Abuse Hotline.
Prevent Abuse by:
-being familiar with symptoms of child abuse
-knowing and following your states laws and community procedures that protect children against abuse and neglect
-reporting to the appropriate community agency when there is reason to suspect child abuse or neglect
-informing parents or guardians, when appropriate, that a report has been made
-assisting another person who reveals a suspicion that a child is being abused or neglected to take appropriate action
